Located in the geographical center of Kentucky, Fagan Branch Reservoir in Lebanon Kentucky is a popular lake for anglers and nature lovers both. With a surface of 140 acres, it is small enough to cover the lake thoroughly in a single outing. There are no gas powered motors allowed, but electric motors are welcome as well as canoes and other self propelled water craft.

The fishing outlook is good at Fagan Branch for a number of the most popular sport fish species. Also, trout fishermen will be excited to learn that the reservoir has recently been receiving stockings of rainbow trout. The 3 mile Cecil L. Gorley Naturalist Trail surrounds the lake. The trail offers numerous views of the lake as well as a chance to view unique species of wildlife including a mature bald eagle.

Located less than a mile from another popular fishing destination, Marion Sportsman Lake, Fagan Branch Reservoir is a great place located right in the heart of Kentucky.

In 2010, the fisheries division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources established a new fishing experience at the Reservoir with a stocking of rainbow trout.

Special Fishing Regulations for Fagan Branch Lake

The Reservoir possesses enough cold-water habitat throughout the summer months for trout to survive year-round. The Reservoir will receive 2,000 rainbow trout each January, followed by another 2,000 each November. Anglers, unless license exempt, must purchase a trout stamp to keep trout. The daily limit is eight fish.These stockings will provide anglers a year-round trout fishing opportunity including night fishing during the summer.

The Reservoir is also home of Fishing For Kids/Mid-Kentucky Bass Anglers Day, which brings in roughly 1,300 people annually.

Fishing Forecast

  • Largemouth bass – Fair – Numerous fish available but population slower growing. Fair numbers or 12-inch fish available.
  • Smallmouth bass – Fair – 12-inch plus fish available with occasional larger fish (18+ inches). Concentrate on dam area.
  • Bluegill – Good – Fair numbers of 6- to 7-inch fish available.
  • Channel catfish – Good – Better than average numbers of 12- to 15-inch fish available. Stocked every other year.
  • Redear sunfish – Fair – Above average numbers of larger fish (8-inch plus) present.
